It is believed that this place was chosen as the sacred location because of the spectacular landscape. From the bubbling mudholes, brightly colored sulphur lakes and thick mist surrounding the plateau, visitors will easily understand why the ancient Javanese considered this place to be the seat of supernatural powers.

Modern visitors to the plateau are enthralled by the unearthly beauty of this spot, with many finding it quite eerie. Each of the small temples is named after figures in the epic tale of the Mahabarata such as Bima, Gatutkaca, Arjuna and Srikandi.

It is believed that these temples used to serve as residences of Hindu priests who would spread Hindu teachings.

The natural splendors of this location are fascinating. The mirror lake is particularly impressive as it offers a perfectly reflective image of the landscape. While sadly, the impact of logging can be seen as many of the trees surrounding the lake have been cut down, it still remains an impressive natural phenomenon.

The plateau, located 2, meters above sea level, offers two sunrises, the golden sunrise and the silver sunrise. Both are equally amazing natural phenomena.

In the old day, Sembungan village struggled with the economy and was considered a very poor village, until in the s they started planting potatoes, which flourished due to its position above the sea level and the fertile land. Today Sembungan is a unique village that offers not only the amazing attractions surrounding it but also the warmth of its people.

From this village, you can also visit the beautiful Cebongan Lake located right in the middle of the village. A mountain that offers a spectacular view, stretching across Dieng and east as far as Merapi and Merbabu volcano on a clear day. To reach the hill for sunrise, you will need to start ascending from Dieng Valley at around 4 am.

It is about one hour walk to Sembungan village and just another 30 minutes to the top of the hill. From here, you can see the breathtaking view of Mount Sindoro. Nowhere in the world is perfectly safe, but Indonesia gets millions of tourists every year, and many of them visit Java.
