The study authors think that cinnamon might be one such way to turn thermogenesis on. In their research, they found a higher expression of certain genes and enzymes that boost lipid metabolism in the adipocytes treated with cinnamaldehyde. Additionally, they found a higher level of Ucp1 and Fgf21 , which are regulatory proteins that help to induce thermogenesis.
The researchers caution that more research is needed to figure out the perfect way to use cinnamaldehyde to trigger thermogenesis without causing any side effects. The down side — it will burn! How much it burns depends on whether your skin is sensitive in general and your own pain tolerance.
Most, however, agree that the mask causes tolerable , even semi-pleasant sensation for a couple of minutes, after which the sensation stops and the skin feels refreshed.
I mean, when you find something that can help you reduce acne scars scars! Cinnamon is a magical spice with a worm scent and healing properties. It purifies the skin and helps you get rid of acne, pimples and blemishes. It dissolves dead skin cells , softens dry patches, reduces fine lines and makes your skin plump and supple. A small amount of the mask got on my neck and it looks super red. I took a small glass of really cold milk to cool it down, which felt nice, and then applied aloe.
It doesn't burn as much but its still really red and a little itchy. I'm just glad I'm not the only one! I have used this for two nights now. It burns, especially after I wash it off. But putting on aloe really helps. Luckily, my skin didn't turn red or anything. I increased the amount of honey the second time. It made it better. This mask really helps reduce pimples almost magically, so I don't want to stop using it.
I guess the reaction depends on the cinnamon to honey ratio as well as the sensitivity of one's skin. I just used the honey cinnamon mask, it burned my face, its so red. Hope it goes away. I have sensitive skin, I only had it on for 20 minuets. It really didn't start to burn until I rinsed it off.
Hope the redness goes away before work tomorrow. What was the nutmeg mask you used? From your experience, I think the nutmeg mask would be more suitable for me as I too, have very sensitive skin. Sorry if I seem to be bothering you, but could you share in what amounts you mixed these ingredients?
How often did you use the mask? It's no problem. I have only use it twice. I don't have the exact measurements. But it was around 1 t nutmeg, 1 T honey, 2 T milk. Hope that helps. Thank you so much! You're the only person so far to have done both masks and compared between them, so thanks for sharing this experience!
This should be seriously distributed It seems that everyone fall for this trap And we didnt find your blog until we've gone through it The same happened to me and thats why im here I had an appointment today but surely will cancel it. I tried this cinnamon mask too. And it burned my face. The lady had said it was going to sting and hurt, but I didn't think it would be that bad. I literally touched my face with it and it started burning so badly. I kept it on for about a minute and then I thought I can't do this anymore, I'll just wash my face.
I took it off and my cheek has a giant red blotch on it. It has been about thirty minutes but I haven't put aloe on it. Do you think it will go away without putting the aloe on it? I don't have any anyway. I think that it will go away but it might take a bit longer. You could try milk or chamomile tea bags or cucumbers too.
Hi gals! I just want to put my input in as I am a skin threrapist. The redness you are experiencing is quite normal. Actually very good for your complexion. As we age circulation and oxygen are crucial to keep the skin young. A little burning is good Not so much. I am use to this effect and make it strong Make sure you do the neck and chest! Krista my face gets super duper red.
After 4 hours it looked like you skin was glowing! May I ask if your skin peeled at all? A very high end skin line uses a resorsinol acid with cinnamon It is hot hot hot! We have to use fans! Many actors use this mehod to get ready for the Red Carpet I have worked on several of them.
They also have a face massage where it gets slapped and pinched to big the oxygen and blood to the surface! I like the mask better myself To make it more purifying add just a few drops of food grade hydrogen peroxide for an added glow.
Hope this helps! I would never do this a few days before a special event You will glow like crazy! What a great blog you have! Thanks so much for commenting. I didn't peel with the cinnamon mask but it burned so much that I don't think that I would tolerate it for the glow. But it's good to know that it's normal and that some people actually like it. The things women do for beauty in Hollywood. Thanks for checking out my blog too. I also had the same problem. I mixed cinamon and lime.
I must have left it on for 5 mins until i couldnt take it and rinsed it off only to see my red face. My face still burned for about 2 hrs after i rinsed it off. I was so worried and kept asking my son if it was still red. However i just checked it again and 2 hrs later and my skin looks great! My face feels clean, tightad glowing.
Thanks for sharing your experience, it help me to calm down. I was really worried and didn't know what to do. I actually applied it for 2 days straight , I somehow endured it but after continuing it on the 3rd day , I started noticing that my forehead had rot of rashes and was raised , same thing happened to my cheek it was swollen , I tried cold compress mower it was worse and started spreading my face I look horrible now , it is it my and painful and the worst part I'm finding puss over them.
Is it normal? I also fixed appointment with dermatologist tomorrow! The rashes and puss sound like purging.
I know it's gross but you might want to look that up. I thought I was allergic to some products that worked for the first few days and then day 7 I was breaking out worse than I have in 30 years. But it turned out to be purging. Just glad I did it when I was off work. Thank god that I found your share. Unluckily, when the liquid from the pad met the mixture, that burn the skin around my eyes : so I have to wear glasses to hide it. In conclusion, the mask better not to go with any liquid product such as milk or cucumber juice as I accidentally found out.
Goodluck next time! Yes, it happened to me as well! The first time, I mixed honey with cinnamon and my skin didn't react at all, and now I added some oatmeal cooked in water and my face was so red! Luckily, I applied honey and oatmeal without cinnamon this time! I will definitely use cinnamon again since it obviously improves blood flow, but next time only with honey, and only a sprinkle.
I just tried a cinnamon mask recently and ended up burning my face and found tried a trick I learned about burns. If you take an egg white and whip it until it's foamy and apply it to your face it helps reduce the burn. Lastly I washed my face with a mild soap and let my face rest. I just tried this mask again today. I had tried it before and my face was fine.
This time however my face and neck were red and hot. I told my mom to come into my room in 30 minutes to see if I was still alive. Using too much cinnamon vs. There should only be a sprinkle of cinnamon. I find the best honey for the face as well was manuka honey. Exact same thing has just happened to me! Unbelievably red face right now, I look ridiculous. I had the mask on for about 5 minutes and was sure it was burning so took it off to discover actual burn lines where the mask had been.
Slavered myself in aloe vera and waiting for it to go down. I deffo will NOT be using this again. Just found this after a cinnamon burn on my back! I let it sit all night on my head with no problems. My scalp is fine. I should have rinsed my head off before stepping in the shower. Stupid me! Took forever to rinse out and didn't realize that the cinnamon was still on my back. Thank goodness for husbands!
He got it off after I got out. It's a burning itching sensation on my back. Lesson learned! I tried this mask the second time 4 days ago and it left me VERY ugly results. When I applied it on my forehead it burned like heck but I read it was supposed to be like that so I continued it down my cheeks and immediately washed it off cuz it hurts My forehead was read and have tiny bumps all over and its itchy. My cheeks have dry red and itchy spots.
Cheeks and forehead have different result but are not flattering. This is the fourth day and I'm feeling really down right now : Thankfully my nose and chin are still fine since I didn't apply on it.
BTW, the only thing I did different from the first time I tried this was that I added water, I guess that was a bad idea? Not sure. I have been using green tea to calm my skin down , haven't tried aloe vera since I don't have one. Any substitutes for it? I wish I read your blog before trying it. All the ones I read had good results. I'm so sorry you had such a serious reaction this time. I would just keep using the green tea or yogurt is soothing too. Hope it calms down soon. What you experienced is not actually a "chemical burn" it went away.
Cinnamon has a chemical in it that is a dermal sensitizer or irritant. It causes redness from blood flow and a warming or burning sensation depending on the concentration and skin type. Increasing blood flow to your skin is beneficial. Cinnamon also kills bacteria. In the right concentration for you it is an awesome tool. The right concentration basically means how much you can stand I make a soap with cinnamon EO in it.
It causes warmth and a sunburn appearance and feel for a while out of the shower that dissipates. On cold days in Chicago the feeling is not unwelcome. My acne clears up, my skin tightens up, win win win for me.
Be careful saying things like "chemical burn" being someone who frequently works with lye I can tell you that cinnamon is not anything close to what I consider a chemical burn I came across this blog post after it was sent to me by a friend who was worried about a face masque recipe recommendation that I gave her. I am really sorry to hear about your experience with the cinnamon. However, I've been using a honey-cinnamon-lemon masque on my face since age 13 when I got into sports and my face started breaking out due to sweating and sunscreen usage.
My skin is also very sensitive and I have a hard time using almost any commercial and non-natural product. I have used this masque recipe with great success for nearly a decade. In the winter, I also have redness around my nose and parts of my jaw, and the cinnamon clears this as well - I know this might sound odd, considering all of the accounts of burns in your post and comments, but as Jerek mentioned above, after the "warmth and sunburn appearance", the skin clears up completely.
My recipe is as follows: 1. Melt the honey in a warm water bath to make it easier to mix with the next 2 ingredients 2. I saw that you mentioned that cinnamon is a chemical substance in a comment above. Actually cinnamon is the dried bark of a tree. My parents are from India and I have seen how cinnamon rolls are harvested and dried for sale during a trip there. I don't trust ground cinnamon so I buy whole cinnamon and grind it myself. It's a much better flavor in cooking as well.
You don't need to apply a whole lot of the masque. I use about a 1. You can store the rest in the fridge for later use. The most important thing about this masque is the timing.
I do not leave it on my face for more than 15 minutes under any circumstances. If I haven't used it in a while ie. If this is a weekly or bimonthly ritual, then I leave it on for about mins. If this is a nightly ritual, I leave it on for minutes. Like Jerek mentioned above, the key thing is finding the right concentration or rather the ideal contact time with your skin to reap the benefits of all three ingrediants.
Immediately after washing off the masque, I apply lotion or a light oil like sweet almond or argan and retire for the evening. I have never experienced a burn over the years. I am in my early 30s and people routinely ask me what college I go to and I still get carded. I'm sure this is due to a combination of good genes and healthy lifestyle, but I also attribute it to this masque recipe. Again, I'm sorry you experienced a burn, but I also wanted to share my own experiences to provide perspective to people wondering if cinnamon will burn your skin.
Let me clarify my chemical description. I meant that everything is chemical in it's composition including our bodies an water. So, everyone should still treat all ingredients with care even if they are all natural and organic.
I think I would have to use a scant amount but I just don't prefer to have it on my face but maybe in a bar of soap for my body. I never once thought that might happen to my face when I was using it or to even consider the amount of cinnamon that I was using. I agree with you! Not everyone has a bad reaction to cinnamon masks. It's all about know your body and skin. Too much of anything is bad. I did the same thing! Im 16 and has acne scars so i decided to try it.
I left it for 35 min. Or more and it didnt burn. When i washed it off it got really red and i applied aloe vera. Im scared that it won't go away i have really sensitive skin. I use that combo as a spot treatment and only a couple of minutes at a time spread out over a few days Wow, I thought cinnamon was supposed to be good for you! I just tried to make a recipe. Supposedly, this can be used as a daily facial cleanser.
I think the woman who recommended this might be slightly sadistic. I only used 1 teaspoon of cinnamon just powder bought at the store , 2 teaspoons of sugar, and a teeny-tiny bit of baking soda. I added the water, and wet my face with water before I applied it. I did not scrub, Just spread it, and I used an amount maybe equal to the nail of my thumb for my entire face.
Within seconds of touching my skin, it started burning like crazy. I washed it off immediately, and the burning sensation stopped. But wow, I am glad I didn't use as much as the recipe recommended, I can't even imagine the pain. This is a recipe to give to someone you really don't like! Thank you so much for enlightening me but I had to try. And damn!! Its hot.
Im white and my face gets red pretty easily. Back to the mask.. I put too much cinnamon. So I recommend testing a smaller area and having some aloe gel!!!!!!!! This helped me a lot!!! Please test before, i didnt and now my skin feels hot to touch. Just tried a cinnamon honey mask and it did the same thing. My face is bright red and really burns. I thought I was badly reacting to it, so I'm glad to know it's not just me.
Never Again. And I have exteremly sensitive skin. Remember that everyone's skin react differently. Thank so much! For uploading this! I tried the mask but it tingled immidiatly so i googled "cinnamon mask burn" i saw your pictures and washed it off right away, my skin became soo red! I used a whipped egg whiye and that really worked wonders! My skin is soo soft right now!
