This can result in an ectopic pregnancy , which can further damage your tube. An HSG test for blocked tubes is an outpatient procedure and can be performed at either of our Lafayette or Baton Rouge fertility clinics. The entire procedure usually takes less than 10 minutes, can usually be performed at the time of your consult, and you will know your results immediately. As the dye is being passed into the uterus, x-ray pictures are taken.
As the dye enters the tubes, it outlines the length of the tubes and spills out their ends if they are open. Abnormalities inside the uterine cavity may also be detected by the doctor when the fluid movement is disrupted by the abnormality.
If the HSG test shows that your tubes are blocked, you can immediately discuss this with our reproductive specialists at the time of your visit. Our doctors will likely recommend either a surgical procedure to directly view the tubes laparoscopy and attempt to clear the blockage or to bypass the tubes and perform in vitro fertilization IVF.
The fertility doctors at Fertility Answers can provide you with all the information and options if your HSG indicates that your tubes are blocked. Sometimes we undertake the investigation in women who have had surgery to their womb or tubes to check all is well before they try to conceive. A woman will be referred for an HSG by her fertility team. She is asked not to have intercourse from the first day of the period and until after the test to ensure she is not pregnant at the time of the examination.
It is important to remember that, for these couples, the infertility journey can be a stressful time. We should recognise that and treat them with dignity, respect and empathy.
On arrival, the woman will be asked to change into a gown and brought to the X-ray room. After taking a brief history, the procedure is fully explained, and the woman is given time for questions and is asked to give her consent to proceed. She then lies on the X-ray table in a similar position to having a smear. A speculum is very gently inserted into the vagina. A very soft tube or catheter is then passed into the canal that leads from the cervix to the womb.
It contains iodine, which can be seen on X-ray images. Using an X-ray camera the doctor watches on a TV screen as the fluid passes into the womb and the tubes. Four or five pictures are taken to make a record of what is seen. These symptoms can be greatly reduced by taking medications used for menstrual cramps before the procedure or when they occur. Women should be prepared to have a family member or friend drive them home after the procedure in the event that they are experiencing cramping.
It is controversial whether this procedure enhances fertility. Some studies show a slight increase in fertility lasting about 3 months after a normal HSG.
However, most doctors perform HSG only for diagnostic reasons. HSG is considered a very safe procedure. If your tubes are blocked, your doctor will likely recommend either a surgical procedure to directly view the tubes laparoscopy or to bypass the tubes and perform in vitro fertilization IVF. This is a complex decision that should be discussed with your doctor.
