In my opinion, you get what you get with a fixed lens, if it is too close step backwards within reason and forward for closer. With a zoom, when at the shortest length you get what you get and can zoom in 3x with the or 11x with the One thing you can't do though is compare the "11x zoom" from the NEX mm and say that will give you the same picture as a superzoom at 11x, it comes back to the sensor.
But we shouldn't get wrapped up in the whole comparison to 35mm, unless you have been a keen 35mm photographer, I came from Compact so I don't care what the relative size is. I will not be stood on top of a mountain looking at the view and dissing the NEX cos the sensor crop is 1. Plus of course and I know you explained this anyway, but I'll re-state it as sometimes people new to photography aren't aware of it the zoom multiple, such as "3x zoom" applies to the zoom RANGE that a particular lens has i.
So two superzoom cameras may both be 10x zoom, but one may offer a mm zoom lens in 35mm terms, and another might have a mm zoom - the latter camera would get a fair bit more in at the wide angle range, and not have so much telephoto reach at the other end of its range, compared with the first camera. So it still has its uses, for unifying the specs of all cameras under a common measuring standard. Also, if you do a 10x digital zoom on NEX camera, one would expect that result is 10 times cropped in resolution, but in reality, NEX camera resizes cropped result back to 14Mpix.
This means, image has even worse quality than cameraphones with no zoom and lot of wasted memory card space. Oter camerophones like pixon 12,like satio like nokia n8? Of course NEX-5 is better than any cameraphone and it's even better than any point-and-shoot as long as you don't use digital zoom. Nex cameras doesn't have a digital zoom And for good reasons but if you really have to crop the image later, I would recommend using manual focus after Autofocus.
This will mean that after you made autofocus you can move the focus ring and manual focus. It will make a 7X digital zoom for you to focus, and you can be sure that the area you want to crop appears sharp and in focus.
There actually is a digital zoom option in the NEX cameras, only available when the 16mm lens is fitted whether it's a wise option to enable is another matter. Ah, didn't know that. I don't have the I only have the zoom. It makes sense to have it for the 16mm. The zoom x factor is meaningless. To get the zoom ratio of any zoom lens, divide the longest focal length by the shortest focal length. Despite both being 3x, the lenses have nothing in common. So the 3x is meaningless.
In 35mm terms, a 50mm lens is considered Normal. A normal would be considered 1x as far as image magnification is concerned. To get a rough approximate of the magnification compared to normal you divide the 35mm equivalent focal length by So the mm 35mm equiv would be a 2x - 6x zoom approximately. The mm E mount lens is mm 35mm equiv due to APS crop factor of 1.
Us old timers, who grew up with 35mm film, can visualize a lens' coverage from the focal length. So to us, the 35mm equiv is very important. But is also necessary when comparing the focal length of lenses on different cameras with different sizes of sensors. The 35mm equiv focal length normalizes all the different sensor sizes so you can easily compare different cameras and the coverage their lenses afford. The greatest of mankind's criminals are those who delude themselves into thinking they have done 'the right thing.

I'm also a beginner but let's see Most kit lenses are not equipped with image stabilization, a feature that stabilizes the lens and prevents the effects of camera shakes from showing on the pictures. To get better results, you can purchase a tripod or a gimbal for accurate focus to ensure more precise and sharper images.
This means it is not ideal for low light conditions as distortions and unwanted blurs will appear on your images. You might need to attach an external flash for specific shoots.
However, narrow apertures are excellent with bright lighting. You can use kit lenses to take pictures during the day , or you can use them in a studio with bright artificial lighting. The 18mmmm kit lenses have a lot of advantages, and there are a lot of things that you can do to maximize your use of the lens.
However, it also has shortcomings that may limit your skills. Kit lenses are made out of plastic, and they are not weather sealed. This means that if it is exposed to harsh weather conditions or if you accidentally drop it, the lens may break and crack. This leads to chromatic aberration and distortion, especially if you are taking pictures in poorly lit places. The 18mmmm kit lens has a wide aperture. If you use the kit lens to take pictures in the dark, it will result in pictures that are filled with distortion and shadows.
The autofocus of an 18mmmm kit lens is slower than the autofocus of other lenses. This means it is not ideal for fast-paced photography like sports or concerts. If you are going to use it for wildlife photography, it is best to be a few feet away from the subject, or else you might startle them.
Kit lenses come in different focal lengths , and the focal lengths depend on the camera you will attach them to. For Canon, aside from the 18mmmm lens for its APS-C cameras, a 24mmmmm focal length range for full-frame cameras is also available.
Although kit lenses do not have a good reputation within the community, they can still be an excellent lens for beginners. Since the 18mm-5mm kit lens has a pretty reasonable focal length, it allows you to take pictures of subjects from far away until you are ready to upgrade to better lenses.
