It would be unfair of the company to penalize the employee for not achieving their goals, since the manager suggested the employee not take the Q4 program. And it would be unfair of the employee to blame the company because the employee decided to wait until Q3 to sign up. Do you abandon the goal? Once you've figured out the reason s that the goal wasn't accomplished, now the tough questions begin. Does the goal need to be redefined in some way?
Do I have all the resources I need to accomplish this goal? What would happen if I do not accomplish this goal a second time? It's possible after you answer these questions, the answer will be, "No, that goal doesn't matter anymore.
People and companies change all the time. The important part is that the situation was analyzed, everyone gave honest feedback, and reached a satisfactory conclusion.
Abandoning a goal takes a lot of guts. If the goal won't be pursued again, then everyone who was invested in that goal needs to understand why. Many people make surface level change and can alter behavior in the short-term, but they ultimately end up back where they started.
When this is the case, we end up sabotaging progress and making excuses. How often are you in situations that support your goals? Do your best to avoid situations that contradict how you want to behave in order to conserve and maintain willpower. Focus on the behavior you want to create instead of what you want to avoid.
They blame other people for their circumstances. The fact is, your current reality is primarily because of you. My current big goal is to ride my bicycle to Alaska from Southern California. Right now I am on Vancouver island pondering if I am still going to do it!? I am physically capable but I have lost my place to stay in Ketchikan really the purpose for going… Very disappointing… In the past I would have been crushed but I now understand the flexibility of goals, which you call backups.
Goals change because you and life changes but no worries. BTW I am a marathoner and the Furman First three day training program helped me run my first marathon under 4 hours. Excellent program. I love the idea of an Annual Review.
Thanks for this Chris. They learn to move on quickly. But then I finished another marathon against the odds leftovers of Hurricane Ike canceled the official event at 10 miles, but I just ran It was delicious; delayed gratification at its finest. Love this! Well, life just gets in the way. The best laid plans are the ones that are the most flexible and can change and adapt to new situations.
I love this idea. Just another self motivational type of tool. Maybe it has to do with the cookie jar and my current longing for a cookie. Chris, When I set goals I like to make sure I can tie them together. When you find ways to interconnect them, you can pursue all of them simultaneously without worrying that your spending too much time on one or the other.
Have you considered running marathons in other countries. You runners are another breed. My brother fell off his roof onto a rock garden and broke his hip up very badly. Lots of screws, etc. The doc said it was the end of running. Six months later he was back at it.
He use to run miles accross the tops of mountians. Now be runs and puts out flags for only 20 miles before the race and takes them down after. Running is his passion. Keep it up. You live an awsome life that inspires us all. Great post about holding yourself accountable and planning for the disappointments. It made me think!!!!
